Col cappello in mano

A Renaissance woman at last?

Agnolo Bronzino, Maria de' Medici
daughter to Cosimo I de' Medici
and Eleonora of Toledo, 1551,
Uffizi Gallery, Florence
I started writing the Friends of Cama blog in 2009, in the same year famous influencer Chiara Ferragni ignited her career as a blogger. At that time I felt the best revival journey for my family workshop would be going back to the origins of the art of ceramics in the terms it was expressed by the handpainted patterns made in Deruta, Italy.

As I was getting more and more isolated from my beloved clientele, because the workshop little by little was going to disappear, I decided a blog would keep me in touch with the rest of the world. I wanted to continue communicating, breathing, being still alive, and not seeing all the lights switch off with the simultaneous action of closing the workshop door that last day with my parents at Cama.

We would not enter that door or any of the other backdoors at the workshop again.

Well, to this date almost 10 years have passed from that painful day of seeing our workshop's entrance door close forever, same as when you see the janitor on duty about to wall the tombstone of a dear one with bricks and cement at the cemetery.

After several attempts and projects on the territory, last December I met the non-profit organization located in Treviso, Italy, and called "100.000 Ripartenze" (100,000 recoveries) dedicated to helping entrepreneurs get back to life with a project. These entrepreneurs are very special: they have gone through bankruptcy or a failure in Italy in the past crises.

The "100.000 Ripartenze" experience has put me in touch with a coach, a mentor, and other professionals. It has allowed me to investigate new horizons regarding my personal role in bringing innovation to the arts & crafts industry. Who am I in terms of expertise, what can I really do beyond my being at the clientele's disposal to sell them ceramics?

To this aim, I found inspiration in exploring my talents, as per the instructions of my coach and president of the association. My talents are listed as follows: 1. activator 2. adaptability 3. communication 4. Context 5. Futuristic (source: CliftonStrengths by Gallup). Because of the soft skills talents emerging, I truly felt like I was on the trend once for all in my life! Indeed, as a creative person, I have been flattered all my life for my energy, however, I never had a clear idea of what my energy was made of.

I have kept my interest high regarding this matter of talents by crowdsourcing. I have known other initiatives in the field of coaching and people helping entrepreneurs, among which "Career Leadhers" was created in 2018 by women for women. I have subscribed to their warmly written newsletter and their Facebook group a couple of weeks ago.

Well, wonders of wonders, this morning I received the Monday Leadhers newsletter with an inspirational Ted Talk by Emilie Wapnick, who basically described who I am: a multipotentialite, a neologism for someone who has talents in multiple areas, a creative person translated into a list of soft skills overlapping with calls in different industries. By listening to the talk, I ended up meeting the descriptive feature: Renaissance person!

This said, with all the work I have made and my revival journey into the Italian Renaissance in this blog, I now truly think of myself as being on the right path and that "I am not alone", said Noah in the 2014 movie by the same name. Totally inspiring.

A contemporary art painting

So far, I think of my revival journey for Cama as a path, in which I have gotten rid of the object, the ceramic pieces that were at the center of the workshop's ceramic production. This art manufacturing took place in Deruta, Italy, a community that has been highly separated by unfair competition, ignited by foreign resellers and distributors, looking for the best price and putting the existing workshops one against each other.

Being the ceramic pieces at the center meant working hard to put as many pieces in production as possible and get the factory going. Our workshop and Deruta itself had no power over the target markets, where our ceramics were exported to. We were simply subcontractors of specialty shops, that lead the markets. No branding of a single workshop in Deruta, no time invested in creating a united production force in town. Only the satisfaction of excellent product quality. However, as we say in Umbrian: "Mangia il Bellino" (tr. eat the flattering) cannot be the starting point for investing over time.

In this scenario and with no funds, back in 2009, I started my revival journey for Cama through this blog. I have ended up forgetting about the ceramic pieces themselves to create visions and abstractions. The biggest achievement on this journey is my essay about an opera singer from my region, which attests to my dedication to the territory and above all how much I have tried to establish contact with shop owners, artisans, and local communities with no good results.

Therefore my essay witnesses above all the close link of our opera singers - pioneers of our Made in Italy on the turn of the 19th and 20th century - with the Italian Renaissance. That's exactly where I have started my journey from, by resuming the roots of our most glorious time in our country, where we have rewritten our common classical Latin and Greek origins Italian style: color meanings, lessons from important leaders among which Cosimo I de' Medici, copy contents and inspiration from the arts to keep going all come to me from Italian Renaissance topics.

Presently, more awareness is coming this way to me from the non-profit organization located in Treviso, Italy and called "100mila Ripartenze" (tr. 100,000 Recoveries). I am learning about soft skills and talents, receiving inputs from a community of experts dedicated to helping companies and professionals, who have undergone failure and much worse bankruptcy, get back to life.

In this picture, I now feel like floating within a contemporary art painting, with no objects and with the aim of framing something totally new to the arts & crafts industry, as it was in my original vision; however, lacking focus in the beginning. But starting is what matters and everything else little by little contributes to shaping what is at heart to us: just do it, as a starting trigger, may suffice.

All things considered, I feel that I have wasted a lot of time all these past years, looking for cooperations on the territory, where -among other things- I have made several mistakes and "Brutta figura" (tr. making a poor showing). Indeed, I was desperate and when you are desperate you do silly things. Actually, what was missing from my vision was academic advanced training in marketing and business administration. In my mind, I got it right. That would have solved my puzzle quite well, by giving me the correct tools to create a new innovative way of doing business in the Italian artisan industry.

Despite my age now, I am quite happy about my journey as it's never too late to give birth to something new for us and for those who have believed in us. As a matter of fact, the artificial bits of intelligence I am meeting online think I am a university student!

Odyssey: the most famous journey of classical times. An update

Odysseus' journey
From the beginning of my journey towards Cama's revival and with the aim of finding content and inspiration for new ways of doing business in the arts & crafts industry, I have felt like a modern Odysseus on a long adventure.

I suppose I am navigating upstream as there is a current "cancel culture" against classical authors in the United States including Homer, better known as "#Disrupttexts". It originated last year as a movement on Twitter.

Such a "politically correct" extreme trend has brought to banning the Odyssey book from the Lawrence High School in Massachusetts as an example.

The #Disrupttexts movement has reached people in Italy, too. Indeed I have recently read an article by an Italian psychologist who had a similar attitude towards Odysseus: he didn't approve of the way the hero treated the women in the book. My question is: what if those women were personifications of events and it is all a matter of interpreting rhetorical figures?

As a matter of fact, my experience is that most arguments and misinterpretations among people are caused by taking things literarily. Therefore the term "literarily" is not by any means a proper adverb to use to evaluate literature either. Aren't cultural tools at our disposal to bring peace?

Nevertheless, despite the refusal of classical books such as the Odyssey, I feel like my getting inspired by Latin and Greek literature was the way to go to get in touch with our origins in times of rebirth. After all, the Odyssey was the civic education book of Greek children and this piece of history cannot be erased.

However, the Odyssey is not the only famous book about a life journey model. Next to it, there is the less acclaimed Aeneid by Virgil, which brought its hero's descent to the foundation of Rome.

Last year writer and scholar Andrea Marcolongo rediscovered and analyzed the Aeneid by Virgil inspired by the beginning of the Covid-19 lockdown. She has realized that the Aeneid fits perfectly with the pandemic time we are experiencing; Aeneas is at the center as "a modern example of those who are defeated, who have lost everything except the ability to resist and to hope", writes the author.

The book was published last September with the title "La Lezione di Enea" (Aeneas's lesson), which I am reading right now. Thankful to the article by @CostanzaRdO in the number 477 "la Lettura" attachment to Italian national newspaper Corriere Della Sera for the updates about the #Disrupttexts.

Super Roberta"  - Maristella, Roma

Grazie" - Maristella

"Ho letto l'articolo e mi è piaciuto molto.

A miracle happened to me in December 2020

For some reason I get to know pretty well, my brain has refused for many years to learn the Ancient Greek language. This obstacle has been living together with me until last December.

Indeed I could not even look at the Greek alphabet. Maybe the four letters I knew were: Alpha and Omega from cemetery tombs,  Pi from maths, and Phi from psychology. That's all.

Then all of a sudden the miracle has happened!

I do not recall if I told you that last December I joined a program for entrepreneurs who have run out of business to get restarted on their projects. Such a program is by a non-profit organization located in Treviso, Italy. Here in the end I have met the right people I have been looking for since 2011: a coach, a mentor and professionals all together ready to help me get back to my professional life and Cama with me. I have one year time to get my projects accomplished starting now.

My coach herself in particular is part of a professional team called "Phronesis". I was looking for my coach's presence on the internet and I ran into her website. Well, "Phronesis" is the Greek word that made me open my mind to Ancient Greek. Unbelievable! Here is how I got it right:

1. First I have looked on the internet for the meaning of "Phronesis";

2. Then I have identified which letters in Italian were corresponding to the letters in Ancient Greek (transliteration);

3. Finally I have started writing the Ancient Greek letters of "Phronesis" one after the other by heart;

4. I have repeated the word "Phronesis" to myself during the day and the days to follow. Sometimes I forgot it. Sometimes I had it right. I also got some good help from "Phronesis" exact pronunciation in Ancient Greek I found on the internet;

4. As a conclusion of this learning path I have looked for the philosophical interpretation of the word "Phronesis" and found some literature by Italian philosopher Umberto Galimberti citing Professor Michel Foucault from the University of Berkeley. That way I have learned the contrary of "Phronesis", i.e. "Parrhesia".

Curiosity about my learning how to write the Greek letters included in "Phronesis": I remembered the letter "ρ" as my name starts by "R"; the letter "ν" as my last name starts by "N" but above all, I remembered the letter "η" as my mother's name starts by "E", Elena.  "Phronesis" most difficult Greek letters that were made easy to learn with the help of what's most familiar to me.

Now and forever φρόνησις  (phronesis)

Deruta flipped tracing papers

Tracing papers used in Deruta majolicas are what cardboards meant to Renaissance artists. Examples of cardboard usages come from Umbrian artist Perugino in particular but also from Pinturicchio, Raffaello and Michelangelo.

Cardboards and tracing papers are indispensable tools for the reproduction of scenes and characters both in frescoes, paintings and ceramics. Such usage of cardboards may be admired in the frescoes by Michelangelo in the Sistine Chapel. Close-up photos were taken during its latest restoration (2000), showing the cardboard dots allowing the charcoal to go through the drawing's perimeter and leaving an imprint on the fresco's preparing surface.

This premise is meant to tell you about the common use of tracing papers and cardboards by flipping them to recreate a corresponding character on the right and the left of the painting, such as a knight, an angel, a man, a woman and so on. By doing this, the artist could save time and keep the work going by producing more products and delivering them faster.

Yesterday I ran into an example coming from Deruta of such a flipped tracing paper usage: the same tracing paper was used for two different plaques (see below). You can tell it is the same San Francis image that is flipped on its right and left version. The same thing happened to the house located on the back of the saint with small differences.

The plaque with Saint Francis on the left comes from the "Madonna del Bagno" sanctuary, located not far from Deruta. It's a votive plaque created to celebrate Saint Francis death's 7th centennial (1226-1926); the one with Saint Francis on the right is part of an aedicule dedicated to Saint Francis on the way to downtown Deruta. The smoke you see comes from the furnaces operated by wood and located downtown Deruta within the castle walls. It's not a fire but an example of wealth and abundance for the city.

My question is: do you think the ceramic artist is the same for both pieces above?

If you wish to detect such a flipped technique in Perugino, Pinturicchio Raffaello or Michelangelo, simply take a painting whose structure has mirroring characters. Most of them were painted by flipping cardboards.

Meniconi-Dolgorouki Wedding Gift made in Deruta, Italy (PART II)

Wedding plate coming from the Ceramic Museum
of Deruta, Italy
In 2016 one of our ceramologists from Deruta, Mr. Giulio Busti, led a lecture about Deruta Renaissance ceramics.  The event was organized by the local Unesco association downtown Perugia.

A favorite ceramic plate of mine was on the event's poster. So that day I drove to Perugia to Busti's lecture.

Besides additional information about the Meniconi-Dolgorouki wedding plate, I have learned several interesting curiosities about my town, Deruta, that I wish to share with you:
1. Deruta ceramics can be admired in 80 different museums in the world;
2. After the plagues immigrants were invited to come and live in Deruta. They were encouraged by the fact that their work would have state tax free for 40 years to follow;
3. It's towards the 1400s that human profiles are being added to the ceramic paintings;
4. The luster technique in Italy was part of the heritage of the towns of Deruta and Gubbio only. If the luster technique was in usage in some other parts of Italy it was only a rare example and much weaker than these two ceramic towns;
5. Deruta ceramicists were very attentive to events that happened in Perugia. Indeed Deruta was a castle belonging to the noble Baglioni family from Perugia. Works of art were created to remember events such as the 'Bloody Wedding' of July 14th, 1501 represented by a ceramic St. Sebastian;
6. Deruta ceramicists were familiar with the artist Perugino who was in Deruta 1476 to paint the ex-voto with which the Derutese were thanking Allmighty God and antipestiferous saints St. Rock and St. Roman for the end of the plague.

Additionally, Mr. Busti's lecture was divided into two parts. The first part was about the Renaissance ceramic tradition in Deruta. It was meant to introduce artist, scholar, genius loci Alpinolo Magnini (1877-1952) who made a change in Deruta by reviving the ceramic Renaissance tradition, which had been swept away by the Industrial Revolution. For this reason, I think it is very interesting to go back to my favorite plate that Alpinolo Magnini painted in 1903 for Mr. and Mrs. Luigi Andreoli, the plate used on the event's poster. Mr. and Mrs. Luigi Andreoli had ordered this ceramic plate as a wedding gift for count Meniconi Bracceschi who was getting married to Russian princess Dolgorouki on September 15th, 1903. Miss Dolgorouki is said to be the niece of the Tzar of Russia. This piece of information I have learned at the lecture besides the fact that Mrs. Andreoli's maiden name was Vanna Briganti. The Briganti family is one of the most important families of Deruta and now I wish to double check if they are related to the Magninis.
